Pat Quinlan, Legendary Newfoundland Fish Magnate, Dies at 88

Quinlan Bros. announced with deep sadness this morning that Pat Quinlan, founder and president of the company, died peacefully after a short illness.   Pat was 88 years old.

"All of our employees, suppliers, customers and clients will surely miss Pat.  He was truly a remarkable person who touched the lives of so many over his long-lived years dedicated to our business and our industry."

"Pat 's passion for the fishery was a tremendous source of inspiration and motivation. Indeed, the depth of knowledge and wisdom that he passed on to so many will live on for many more decades to come."

The 2017 Pacific whiting season improved over 2016, with higher landings, bigger fish and improved markets, but the preliminary biomass estimate for 2018 is down.

The U.S. mothership sector caught close to as much hake as it did last year, harvesting 66,421 mt through Dec. 14. That's only 69 percent of the 96,884 mt mothership allocation but higher than 2016 landings of 65,035 mt.

How is it that scallops catches will rise next year, while the scallop fleet takes an 85% reduction in yellowtail bycatch in Southern New England.

Actually these two things are not contradictory.  The scallop industry and the New England regional council have been working for years to reduce yellowtail bycatch in the scallop industry by modifying dredges, and by providing a large mesh escape nets above the dredge.  The council has also prohibited possession of yellowtail by Scallopers.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) held their 11th Ministerial Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, earlier this week, which concluded with members agreeing to “continue to engage constructively in the fisheries subsidies negotiations.”

Northern California Dungeness Crab Meat Recovery Rates Show Incremental Growth

California Dungeness crab are filling out -- but very slowly.

State fishery managers from all three West Coast states agreed to delay the commercial crab season until Dec. 31 at the earliest, due to low meat recovery rates. Oregon crab results were made available last week. The California numbers from Dec. 5 testing were released this week.

Russia will Expand Pollock to 2 Million Tons of Production Next Year; Aims to Undercut US on Price

Russia plans to overtake the US in the global pollock market during the next several years, that will take place through the increase of domestic production and possible expansion in major export markets, Russian experts believe.

According to predictions of experts of Russian Rosrybolovstvo, already next year pollock production in Russia may exceed 2 million tons, that will be significantly higher figures of the current year, which are predicted at 1.8 million tons.

Rosrybolovstvo expects already next year  Russian companies will start on-board production of pollock surimi and fillets and will start active expansion on global market with this product. A new study published in Ecology Letters has found that spawning salmon aid their offspring by dying after migrating home.

Researchers at the University of Glawgow’s Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine conducted an experimental study of salmon streams in northern Scotland. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has awarded the North Sea Brown shrimp fishery with the MSC certificate for sustainability.

Fishermen, conservation NGOs, government bodies and scientists began working together in 2015 to achieve the MSC certification. On Wednesday the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) posted an import alert for “detention without physical examination of seafood due to hepatitis A contamination.
