John West Deal for FAD-Free tuna in Australia is largest yet for Pacifical

The agreement announced yesterday by John West, to source 100 million cans of FAD Free tuna from Pacifical for Australian markets, is the largest deal yet to commercialize the MSC certified skipjack produced by Pacifical. This amounts to 43% of Australia's canned tuna. The cans will be labeled Pacifical MSC, says Pacifical. In the past, John West has generally only used "pole and line" labeling on some of its cans, not the usual MSC blue logo.
Pacifical is the marketing arm of the PNA countries who control about 50% of the global skipjack supply. The fishery was certified by the MSC in 2011, on the basis that participating vessels would segregate fish in the holds that were caught on free schools, vs. those caught on FADs - fish aggregating devices.
