US Shrimpers Seek End to Seafood Anti-Dumping Rules

US domestic shrimpers have formed a new organization to push for an end to American anti-dumping and counterveiling duty rules.
April Smith, a publicist hired by the group, said that many of her association's members have decided they can get higher prices by selling shrimp to China. Just as their brothers in the Florida Keys have found that selling lobsters to China totally boosted their price, the shrimpers say they are fed up with the attitude of local processors, and will take their business elsewhere.
In their preliminary outreach to Chinese buyers, one of the biggest obstacles was the 100% counterveiling duty put in place against Chinese shrimp by a rival organization, the Southern Shrimp Alliance, in 2004.
Fol Mei, who represents a Chinese real estate, sock manufacturing, and shrimp conglomerate, told the shrimp exporters that no contracts would be signed or even approved by the Chinese government unless there was a level playing field, and Chinese shrimp could be sold whereever American shrimp was sold...
