Today's Main Story: PEI Doesn't Expect Big Spread Between Canner and Market Sized Lobster Prices this Season
The PEI Fishermen's Association says prices between canner and market-sized lobsters will not be very wide this season given this year's demand for more smaller-sized live lobsters. "There really shouldn't be any difference, much difference anymore in the price of canners and markets," said the Association's president Craig Avery. Fishing in the province is expected to get going sometime next week. Boat prices are higher over last year at this time with lobster demand quite high this year.
Longtime NPFMC member Duncan Fields filed paperwork this week that will allow him to start campaigning for the Kodiak seat on Alaska's state legislator. Fields will run as an independent and challenge Kodiak's current, first-term Rep. Louise Stutes. Fields is an attorney and fishermen and has been involved in Alaskan fisheries and fish politics for years. Fields will wrap up his ninth and final year as a member of the NPFMC in August.
In other news, a decline in tilapia stocking among producers in South China is expected to help raise prices. According to reports, the combination of hot temperatures early in 2015, a cold front to end the year and far lower market prices throughout last year forced Chinese farmers to reduce pond stocking. The expectation is for Chinese tilapia prices to rebound this year from more limited tilapia supplies.
Finally, Santa Monica Seafood received BAP certification for its recently renovated seafood processing headquarters in California. “Our recently refurbished and expanded 120,000 square foot Rancho Dominguez main processing facility is now a BAP certified processing plant for repacking salmon and tilapia products. We are proud to be 1 of only 14 seafood plants in the U.S. that are BAP certified as a repacking plant," said Santa Monica's CEO Roger O’Brien.
