Today's Main Story: Despite Demand, Indian Shrimp Exporters Margins Under Pressure
Today's news begins taking a look at while the Indian aquaculture industry has benefitted from the slowdown in production in countries like China, Vietnam and Thailand, the major global suppliers of shrimp, high demand has also induced a rise in farm gate prices. At the same time the average international prices are more or less stable as most importers tend to hold several months inventory; and this has put the margins of Indian exporters under pressure.
In other news, the Fraser River Panel met on Friday to review assessment data and decreased the estimated run size of all four of the Fraser’s sockeye runs to a total sum of 853,000 fish. “This is the lowest run-size ever estimated since estimates began in 1893,” the Panel’s report stated. "The exact reasons why the return fell at the lower end of the forecast range are unknown at this time, but poorer than average marine survival is a leading candidate,” the report said.
