Today's Main Story: Mexico 16-20s, 21s Will Be Short This Year as Disease Takes Toll on Shrimp Harvest
Leading the headlines today is a look at how large-sized farmed shrimp from Mexico will be short this year. Recent reports show that disease and poor quality PLs have taken a toll on farmed shrimp production. With the harvest season just getting underway, estimates are for a 15% to 30% decrease in production, due both to some lingering EMS issues and whitespot. In addition, there were some poor quality PL stocked this year, which also hurt production.
In other news, the long awaited Blue North, a 191-foot freezer longliner built by Dakota Creek in Anacortes, was christened Friday at Fisherman’s Terminal in Seattle to a capacity crowd of well-wishers and those simply curious to see the moon pool, where the gear comes out of the water and enters the vessel amidships. Governor Jay Inslee was among the well wishers, noting that the state is known for innovation: the rockets that sent the unmanned spacecraft to an asteroid on Friday were designed and made in Redmond, WA.
