Robins McIntosh Says the Thai Shrimp Industry Has Learned to Live with EMS and Prosper

Robins McIntosh, Senior Vice President of CP Foods, who is responsible for their shrimp breeding program, spoke on what has been learned from EMS.
The biggest takeaway, says Robins, is that in the real world all of the major shrimp diseases interact and affect each other, so EMS, Whitespot, EHP all impact each other and cannot be addressed in isolation.
With EMS, clean ponds and biosecurity to limit vibrio keeps the disease from occurring, even though EMS is still in ponds at a low level. At the same time, some of these diseases offer protection from others.. so that areas with white spot may have EMS, but it is suppressed.
The solution in Thailand has been to focus on using a smaller percentage of the ponds for growing shrimp..
