Hawaii Longliners, Auction Move to Regain Buyers' Confidence with Labor Audit

The Hawaiian seafood industry is taking swift action to assess problems and implement solutions in the wake of a September Associated Press article that alleged forced labor, human trafficking and poor working conditions on longliners that use foreign contracted crewmen.
“The industry takes the AP report seriously,” Hawaii fishing industry member and advocate Jim Cook said in a press release, and “is actively assessing the situation and is committed to making certain that if found, forced labor and labor abuse is eliminated from the fishing industry.”
