High Price of Japonicus Snow Crab Likely to Continue this Season with Less Crab Imports from Russia

Crab buyers looking to other species than Opilio are not likely to find much relief with red snow crab, or Chchionoecetes japonicus. According to buyers in Japan, red snow crab has been staying in a high price zone in continuation from last year, one month after the opening of this year’s season opened at Sakaiminato Port in Tottori, western Japan prefecture facing the Sea of Japan.
Sakaiminato is the largest landing port for red snow crab in Japan.
The average beach price was above Y10,000 ($96) per case (30 kg), causing processors to struggle with raw material prices.
Japanese fishing sources consider the main cause of the continuing high price--like in the case of other crab species --is the decline in Japan’s imports from Russia...
