Hawaii Crew Rights Defender Slams AP News For Failing to Follow Up on Hawaii Industry Initiatives

AP created a wave of concern among buyers around the globe when they reported that foreign workers on some Hawaiian longliners were being trafficked and exploited. Some companies temporarily stopped purchasing fish on the Hawaii auction.
The auction itself took immediate steps to require full registration and tracking of crew payments on all vessels selling on the auction.
At the same time, a number of other steps were taken to verify the status of foreign contract workers on Hawaiian ships, and in particular to uncover potentials for abuse and trafficking.
Now, some of the global leaders asking for respect for crew are calling on the AP to update its reporting with the facts about Hawaiian seafood, and the steps taken to combat slavery. Yet so far, the AP organization has not reported on the fleet’s efforts.
