WWF and FFAW Update FIP for Northern Cod Recovery in Newfoundland

WWF-Canada and Fish, Food and Allied Workers (FFAW-Unifor) released their action plan today for rebuilding northern cod in Newfoundland and Labrador. The comprehensive action plan is a milestone in a Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) run by WWF-Canada and FFAW-Unifor on the northern cod (NAFO divisions 2J3KL) stewardship fishery operating inshore.
The FIP will implement improvement measures that will ensure continued sustainability once the stock has grown to levels that support a full commercial fishery.
There are currently two fishery improvement projects on Northern Cod aiming to get the fishery to the MSC approval level, to provide market access. One is run by the WWF and FFAW and focuses on the inshore fishery. The second one, run by some of the major processors and buyers, along with the Association of Seafood Producers, focuses on the offshore fishery.
The Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, which is supportive but not involved for both FIPs, commented
