After Vannamei Difficulties, Some Guangdong Farmers Turn to Japanese Kuruma Shrimp for Live Market

An analysis of kuruma shrimp farming in the western Guangdong shows a resurgence in interest after failures in vannamei farming. Marsupenaeus japonicus, known as kuruma shrimps, grow mostly in Japan, North Korea, the east coast of Africa, the Indo-West Pacific as well as the southeast coast of China. And China has started shrimp cultivation since 1980s. The shrimps were initially raised in earth ponds with low output and high disease incidence.
So farmers mostly raised white shrimps and they were not interested in kuruma shrimp aquaculture.
However, the situation has changed since 2013. White shrimp farming has suffered from water pollution, quality degeneration and frequent diseases, while kuruma shrimps are becoming popular with satisfying prices and high survival rates in cold weather and transportation.
In 2014 and 2015, many farmers with high-level ponds have changed from the aquaculture of white shrimps to that of kuruma shrimps in the coast of western Guangdong. ..
