Dungeness Crabbers, Processors Reach Compromise Price of $2.875 lb, Ending Strike

In what some described as a tense process, Oregon Dungeness crabbers and processors agreed Friday afternoon to a compromise ex-vessel price of $2.875 per pound. This will enable Oregon fishermen to get back on the water or to set their gear for the first time.
The settlement came out of the fifth round of state-supervised price talks between fishermen and processors since November. This series was one of the longest and toughest series of negotiations, lasting seven days in total.
The agreement also may ensure that crabbers in Washington and California return to or start fishing. Fishermen in those states went on strike with Oregon crabbers out of solidarity to a potential price drop from $3 to $2.75 per pound as the majority of the Oregon coast was ready to open at the end of December. However, the industries in California and Washington are not bound by the agreement made in Oregon.
