Today's Main Story: Alaska's Board of Fish Cancels Bering Sea Bairdi Crab Fishery in Split Vote
Opening the news today is a focus on how last week the Bering Sea crabbers received bad news when the last hope for a bairdi Tanner fishery was dashed. The Board of Fisheries in a split vote decided against opening the fishery which produced 20 million pounds last year. Crab harvests are based on results of summer surveys and for Tanners, the numbers are driven by the abundance of female crab. Those numbers were not sufficient enough to open even a reduced fishery.
In other news, the FDA issued final guidance for fish consumption for pregnant women, which said 90 percent of the seafood items consumed in the US are safe to eat for expecting mothers. But the National Fisheries Institute said the advice lacks a science-based message and will confuse consumers
