Portion of Kodiak Sac Roe Herring Fishery Temporarily Shut Down for Lack of Fish
SEAFOODNEWS.COM [SeafoodNews] April 20, 2017
Kodiak’s commercial herring sac roe fishery in the combined Village Islands/Uganik bay sections is on a temporary stand down because of a lack of harvestable fish.
About 80 tons of sac roe herring have been harvested from the region to date.
A release from the ADF&G said the research vessel K-Hi-C is now departing the Uganik Bay and will now conduct surveys in the Izhut Bay Section.
Kodiak’s herring season opened on April 15. This year’s herring stock is strong but made up of mostly smaller, 3-5 year old fish. That prompted managers to reduce the harvest slightly to 1,645 tons.
