Hokkaido Squid Processors Ask Japan to Increase Import Quota After Poor Harvests

Hokkaido squid processors urge the government to expand squid import quota in the wake of last year’s historic poor harvest.
Mayor Toshiki Kudo and representatives of squid processing industry of Hakodate City, southern Hokkaido port known for squid fishing, recently visited the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Ministry of Economy and Industry to request for expansion of Japan’s squid import quota and extend other assistance from the national government in the wake of last year's historic poor harvests.
According to Hakodate municipal government, landings of flying squid in 2016 in the city totaled about 8,000 tons--a drastic drop of 80% over the past decade.
Kudo explained to the Fisheries Ministry's top officials that Hakodate produces one third of processed squid..
