Commercial salmon feed formulas contain more than 70% of plant ingredients – but that’s not how it’s always been. Ten to 15 years ago these formulas were composed of fishmeal and fish oil.
Fishmeal and fish oil provided salmon with the appropriate protein needed for farmed salmon to thrive, but since it was coming from wild caught fish, it was criticized from a sustainability perspective.
