MSC Says Hands Tied on PNA Review, Says Our Story Mischaracterized Parliamentary Interest

The MSC sent a statement in response to our story of December 7, about On the Hook's Campaign to Object to the MSC certifying PNA tuna when the same fleet catches both approved and unapproved products.
They said in particular that the recertification of the PNA fishery is currently under a formal Objection. MSC is unable to comment or engage on the issue of the PNA recertification until such time as the Objections Process is complete, which will happen when the Independent Adjudicator makes his final determination.
They said certification decisions are taken by our third party certifiers against specific versions of our Standard and Requirements. MSC cannot intervene to halt an assessment because decisions on certification are taken by our third party certifiers, not by MSC.
If our requirements do change as a result of consultation, all affected fisheries are required to come into alignment with the new requirements according to the implementation timeframe specified by the Board.
