North Pacific Council Hosts Collaborative Workshop on Ecosystem Management to Good Reviews

The concept of managing the world’s fisheries resources not as single stocks but as part of diverse ecosystems has been percolating through regional management councils, oceanographic and marine resource departments, and among fishing fleets, for a decade or more.
Among the first to embrace the concept and create an Ecosystem Committee was the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council. Earlier this week, the Council hosted a workshop on the topic in the recent wake of an alarming stock assessment for Pacific cod in the Gulf of Alaska.
The workshop wanted to highlight ecosystem management in light of a changing climate. That brought climate experts, biologists, fishermen, and coastal residents to the table to hear from each other.
