The Seafoodnews.com article on March 8th entitled “NL Fisheries Alliance and Gus Etchegary Fault Ottawa for Not Monitoring Frozen Transshipments” is deeply troubling.
To begin, this article is rife with false information and should have been fact-checked before appearing on local media outlets far before it was republished on a reputable international agency such as Seafoodnews.com.
The fishery conducted by the large-vessel sector in Newfoundland and Labrador is in-fact, much more tightly regulated than other Groundfish sectors.
The fishery is monitored from the moment the vessel leaves port to when the vessel offloads and at all steps in between. Through the use of DFO-accredited third party at-sea observer programs that covered 75% of trips in 2017, 100% dockside monitoring of offloads, at-sea inspections, mandatory logbooks, daily hail reports and satellite vessel monitoring systems, there is complete knowledge of what, how and where fish are caught, ..
