Prospect of longline survey for bluefin tuna in Gulf of St. Lawrence draws opposition

A Department of Fisheries and Oceans Request For Proposals (RFP) to conduct a " scientific " survey of giant bluefin tuna stocks in the Gulf of St Lawrence raised alarms amongst captains of the hook and line fleet because of two submissions by the Nova Scotia Swordfishrmen's Association , which would set longlines to gather specimens.
Their concerns travelled all the way to the Canadian parliament with Cardigan MP Lawrence MacAulay ,asking whether Fisheries Minister Gail Shea was aware of applications that would use longlining techniques in a five year survey estimated to cost well over one million dollars.
