Retailers have cut back seafood promotions across the board in March of 2014 compared to March of 2013, coinciding with Lent. Also the median promotional price has risen by $1.00. The largest cutbacks have been in salmon and shrimp, where prices also rose substantially. But even tilapia promotions are lower, although consumer median prices have not changed. Although this analysis covers seafood promotions at the seafood case, it likely reflects the experience of branded frozen seafood as well. We also look at how this cutback may increase price volatility in the future as supplies of some items improve.
‘A’ season pollock surimi output in Alaska will be at the highest level in 8 years. There has been a significant shift from block to surimi production this year, based on stronger surimi markets and larger fish size, which gives packers more flexibility to plan production.
