Letters: Canadian swordfish longliners object to characterization of Gulf bluefin tuna survey

As a follow up to your piece, (Prospect of longline survey for bluefin tuna in Gulf of St. Lawrence draws opposition Seafood.com News April 10th), written by Jack MacAndrew, I thought I would write to correct several misconceptions that are in the article.
The request for proposals from Fisheries and Oceans, Canada was specifically to develop a fishery independent index of abundance for bluefin tuna in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and not for a “scientific” survey to be conducted by any specific fleet or with any specific gear type. A fishery independent index of abundance does not necessarily require any fishing to take place at all.
