Top Story: Sakhalin hatcheries will release more salmon than Prince William Sound this year
Both the MSC and SFP have raised large concerns about Alaska’s hatchery program, with MSC refusing to certify Prince William Sound pink salmon last year. Yet a survey shows Sakhalin hatcheries will release 12% more pink salmon than Alaska’s PWS hatcheries - yet there is nowhere near the management controls in Sakhalin to monitor these impacts. We think there is a clear double standard here, and hope a pass/fail GSSI certification standard would reduce this failure in sustainability measurements, where Sakhalin pink salmon, with 25% IUU and high hatchery inputs, are preferred by NGOs over the demonstrably better managed Alaska fishery.
In other news, we expand on the positive surimi story we reported a week ago, with Jeanne Stewart's interview with Doug Christensen of Arctic Storm. They are packing more surimi than fillets for the first time in 15 years, and are bullish on surimi prices for the rest of the year.
