A final push is on to settle Japanese crab prices in Newfoundland, with the Japanese side leaking prices between $4.85 and $4.80, FOB plant. If these prices become the contract norm, they will represent an increase over 2013, but possibly less than processors may have wanted.

In addition to some of the industry issues - like rebuilding and depleted definitions, there is evidence of major lobbying by NGOs to push for tight restrictions on forage fish; and by the powerful recreational equipment and charter lobby, for reallocation battles with commercial quota holders every eight years. The latter provision, if it survives, would deal a big blow to quota values in mixed fisheries like halibut and red snapper as a major new risk element would be introduced.
