Scientists to study tsunami debris invasive species, 400,000 tons expected to hit AK, OR this summer

The Environment Ministry of Japan plans to study the possible impact of debris from the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake that has either reached or is floating toward North American shores, as shellfish and seaweed adhering to the debris may negatively affect ecosystems there.
The research, which will start in June at the earliest, will be conducted for three years with the cooperation of U.S. and Canadian scientists.
