Global Shrimp production declined at least 12% in 2013, say experts at Aquaculture Roundtable
Tom Seaman of Undercurrent News attended the Aquaculture Roundtable in Phuket, Thailand this week, and reports on the estimates of global shrimp production presented at the conference.
Although speakers’ estimates for global shrimp production in 2013 varied widely during the presentations at the 2014 Aquaculture Roundtable Series (TARS) conference held on Aug. 20 in Phuket, Thailand, there was greater consistency in the percentage decline producers experienced.
Global production estimates varied from a level of 1.815 million metric tons, to 3.25m metric tons.
In response to a question on the discrepancy, Daniel Fegan, regional technical manager for Cargill Animal Nutrition, a division of the US agribusiness giant, said getting any sort of totally accurate figure is next to impossible.
“The best figures are from the FAO [UN Food and Agriculture Organizaiton] and they are two years behind,” he said. “We just have to live with the quality of the information we can get.”
