Chilean researchers at the University of Magallanes with help from aquaculture firm Skysal have made progress farming Atlantic halibut at its Center for Mariculture in the Punta Arenas regions. But the project will be put on hiatus for the remainder of the year as funding will be sought out to take the operation to the next phase of production.
The 17 year long project has successfully reared some halibut larvae using experimental recirculating ponds. The next phase of the operation will seek to improve hatching and survival rates along with defining other key elements of the process.
Meanwhile, Skysal CEO, David Friedli, said his company will seek for more governmental funding "to address questions that persist about optimizing and securing the cultivation of this species."
