Florida's stone crab harvesters live and die by the moon and tides, season off to a slow start

MANATEE, It's official, folks -- stone crab season in Florida is here.
For Karen Bell, the owner of A.P. Bell Fish Co. how the season will do is still up in the air.
Bell said fishermen attribute the low numbers of stone crabs to the moon and warm weather. Crabs, she said, tend to like dark, cold and rough weather.
"The crabbers live and die by the moon and tides. They're telling me the crabs will not crawl around when it's light or bright out," Bell said. "As the moon diminishes, they'll see more crab activity, especially if it's coupled with cooler weather."
