Japan may ask importers to shun Mexican bluefin as Mexico resists ICCCAT proposal on juveniles

Japan is mulling whether to ask importers to shun buying bluefin tuna from Mexico in bid to prevent overfishing of immature fish.
The Fisheries Agency of the Japanese government is considering asking trading houses and other importers to refrain as much as possible from buying Pacific bluefin tuna from Mexico in an apparent bid to encourage the Mexican government to take steps to prevent overfishing in its near-shore waters where many immature bluefin tunas are found, according to a knowledgeable source on October 25.
The envisioned request by Japan is seen to represent a rare step toward realizing effective stock management as the world’s largest tuna consuming country.
