Russian ban and sinking ruble leave Estonia with 35,000 tons of surplus fish

TALLINN, Estonian firms harvest or purchase 55,000 tons of sprat and Baltic herring annually, but as a result of the Russian sanctions there is a surplus of approximately 35,000 tons of fish.
There is no market for this amount at present.
"The Russian border is currently open only to canned fish and spice-cured sprat, but their sales are nothing to boast about, either," manager of the Estonian Association of Fishery Valdur Noormagi said. "The fish are already too expensive for the Russian people. As a result of inflation, one euro equals 60 Russian rubles. This turns our products into a downright luxury food on the other side of the eastern border that people cannot afford to buy," he said.
