Today's Main Story: White Cap/Sirena Buy 50% of Shrimp Processor in Quebec in Partnership with Lyons Seafoods
White Cap International and Lyons Seafoods announced a partnership to purchase the Quebec company Les Pêcheries Marinard Ltée. The consortium will take a 50% share in Les Pecheries Marinard Ltee, along with existing management. These leading international seafood companies acquire, in part, a jewel of the Gaspésie fishing industry to consolidate their supply of certified quality shrimp products. The deal will secure shrimp supplies for Lyons, and its customer, Marks and Spencer. White Cap has been exclusively representing shrimp from Pecheries Marinard and was instrumental in helping the company remain independent in 2009.
In other news, Marel announced it has ceased its manufacturing operations in Singapore and merged two of its existing US-based facilities in two major steps towards a more streamlined and cost effective future manufacturing footprint in line with its ongoing Simpler, Smarter, Faster refocusing program. Part of Marel's refocusing strategy also includes developing on-board solutions for the fish industry.
A University of Alaska Fairbanks study involving residents of Kodiak has identified crew members and the next generation of fishermen as disproportionately affected by the privatization of fishing rights. Courtney Carothers, who conducted the study concluded that "Scholars and fishermen alike view the privatization of fishing rights as a fundamental driver of social change in fishing communities." The results were presented in Anchorage. Findings from the study suggest that a diverse range of fishery participants share core values about the social dimensions of fishery systems.
