Senate Passes Resolution Opposing Aleutians Marine Sanctuary

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — The Alaska Legislature has passed a resolution opposing a new marine sanctuary in the Aleutian Islands.
Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility in December petitioned the National Marine Fisheries Service to create a sanctuary of 554,000 square nautical miles in waters near the Alaska Peninsula and Aleutian Islands. The federal fisheries agency rejected the petition but told proponents they could resubmit their request.
The Senate on Wednesday passed a resolution opposing another nomination, or such a designation.
