Peru's Entire Anchovy Quota Expected to be Taken as Northern Season Gets Underway

Peru's anchovy fleet kicked off fishing in the northern region over the weekend and expectations are that it will be able to land the entire 2.58 million ton anchovy quota this year before the season closes on June 30.
The National Fisheries Society's President Elena Conterno said the entire Peruvian quota should be taken this year with the fleet now 30 percent larger at 500 vessels. The government's decision to permit fishing 5 miles offshore compared to 10 miles should also help the fleet reach the quota by June.
Still, Luis Icochea, the former director of the Institute of the Sea of Peru, said if Peru wanted assurance that the entire quota would be landed, it would relax rules that require fishing be closed if over 10 percent of the catch is comprised of juvenile fish...
