Gulf of Alaska Trawlers Working on Emergency Request to NPFMC for Mechanism to open Fall Fishery

The Alaska Whitefish Trawlers Association represents independent vessels harvesting groundfish in the Gulf of Alaska that deliver to shore based plants and has been based in Kodiak for over 40 years.
They have been hit hard by the closure of the Gulf to their sector due to reaching the limits of a chinook bycatch cap.
Although other fisheries will continue, due to the breakout of chinook bycatch by sector, the non-pollock, non-rockfish trawl sector will lose 10,355 tons of pacific cod in the 'B' season. No other sector has access to these fish, and without relief they will be 'stranded'.
