Globalpesca Says Chile's Toothfish Catch Needs to be Raised

Major Chilean toothfish exporter Globalpesca says the season's far lower quota in 2015 will cuts its earnings once again. The company said the toothfish stock can support a far higher quota and looks forward to when fishery managers reasses the stock for the 2016 season.
Last year Chilean fishery officals cut the toothfish--or Chilean Sea Bass-- quota to about a a third the 2013 catch. According to Globalpesca CEO Eduaro Infante, fishermen have already caught the 1,100 tons earmarked for the 2015 season. He said Globalpesca's earnings from its toothfish sales have plumetted since 2011 with projections that the company's earnings will be down 80 percent compared to 2014.
Enfante said the quota cut was relatively steep since fishermen have reported abundant stocks of high quality topthfish in the region. Infante said the quota cut was based on scientific findings from the Fisheries Development Institute that have since been criticzed by Australian scientist Dr. Tom Polacheck...
