High Production Costs, Increased Mortality, Low Prices Hitting Mekong Shrimp Farmers

Aquatic farmers in the Mekong Delta are facing huge losses as shrimp prices are falling while their production costs are increasing, the Nong Nghiep Viet Nam newspaper reported.
Shrimp prices have fallen 30% from the same period last year to VND70,000-VND235,000 ($4.6-$10.83) a kilogram, the newspaper said, adding shrimp prices fall by VND5,000-VND10,000 a week.
Meanwhile, prices of animal drugs and aquatic feed keep increasing while prices of electricity also rose, making shrimp production costs become higher, the newspaper noted.
