Early Numbers Show Copper River Escapement is Higher and Harvests are Lower Than Predicted

In the first week of the eight-week Copper River red run, a total of 56,000 sockeye, 4200 chinook, and 1,700 chum were landed by Cordova’s gillnet fleet. Last Monday’s 24-hour opener netted 40,000 sockeye instead of the expected 92,000 fish.
The season continues this morning with a 24-hour opener starting at 7 a.m.
Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game also opened three districts in Prince William Sound to drift gillnets, all but one to start on Monday...
