Japan Wants to Lead International Effort to Conserve Eel and Bluefin Tuna Stocks

Japan expressed its determination Friday to lead the international control of Japanese eel and Pacific bluefin tuna stocks as the largest consumer of the two endangered species.
Japan bears considerable responsibility for ensuring the sustainable use of the marine resources, the government's annual white paper on fisheries said.
The Environment Ministry designates the Japanese eel as an endangered species due to a sharp decrease in the glass eel population.
