Alaska Pilot Program to Test for Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning Ends

ANCHORAGE – A state-funded program that tested for paralytic shellfish (PSP) poisoning on Alaskan beaches will end on June 30.
The small pilot program ran for three years but officials say it was never intended to certify any beaches as safe for collecting shellfish, and the state recommends against that.
State epidemiologist Michael Cooper says people who consume shellfish they collect from Alaskan beaches should be aware of the very real risks of PSP.
