The Talley's-owned Amaltal Explorer has set off on a voyage to assess orange roughy stocks off the West Coast and bottom of the South Island as a rebuilding of stocks leads to industry optimism that sustainable harvest may soon be possible.
The Nelson-based deep-sea trawler has been equipped with leading-edge technology to survey two areas closed to orange roughy fishing since 1998 to allow numbers to increase to a healthy level that is optimum for continued fishing. It began the 16-day Ministry for Primary Industries- approved voyage on Saturday, which is paid for by the seafood industry with costs offset by a special 50-tonne quota.
Fisheries closures had proven successful in other orange roughy fisheries, such as the Challenger Plateau and Chatham Rise, where stocks were now estimated to be at healthy and optimum levels.
