Poland's Seafood Imports Higher in 2015 Driven by Shrimp Demand

Poland expanded its import of fish and seafood from a wide range of foreign markets this year, and it is forecasted to further increase them by the end of 2015, as indicated by data released by a state-run research institute.
In the first quarter of 2015, Poland imported some 135,900 tonnes of fish and seafood from various foreign markets, an increase of 2.4% compared with a year earlier, according to figures from the country’s food market institute IERiGZ, in. In total, the imports were worth PLN 1.7 billion ($470 million), up 4.2% compared with the same period in 2014.
This said, while an average Pole consumes about 11.45 kg of fish per year, seafood consumption, at 0.25 kg, is considerably less strong among Polish consumers. Shrimp dominates the country’s consumption of seafood, with a share of about 90%.
