Channel Tunnel Delays Hit Scottish Seafood Exports Hard

Ministers will convene a crisis conference today to develop a plan to help the stricken Scottish seafood industry by bypassing the Calais pinch-point that is blocking exports from reaching their destinations on the continent.
Exporters of shellfish have been particularly badly hit by the delays caused by the immigration crisis in France because their stock is so perishable.
Many hauliers have had to watch their loads rot while stuck in queues in southeast England as migrants try to break into the Channel Tunnel terminal on the French coast. Some companies say customers are deserting them for unaffected Scandinavian suppliers.
The seafood sector is crucial to Scotland, with the £461 million of produce sold last year accounting for two thirds of the country’s food exports.
