Canada, New Zealand Seafood Sectors Welcome TPP; NFI Says No Changes in Shrimp Inspections
Canada and New Zealand’s seafood sectors have welcomed this week’s news that negotiations have concluded and a final agreement has been reached for Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal. Seafood industry representatives from Canada and New Zealand said the TPP will increase access to overseas markets through the elimination of tariffs. In the US, Alaska’s seafood exports to Japan will benefit. Meanwhile, no changes to US anti-dumping laws were made, so changes to administrative reviews for shrimp and catfish dumping are not expected.
Salmon permit prices in Alaska are in free fall now that the season is over. Reports found the cost of a salmon permit down as much as 36 percent from the spring, before the summer fishing season. "The permit market is really unsettled right now after the season we just had. There were a few bright spots out there, but fisheries in a few areas of the state that did not do well, either because of production or price or both. So the dust really hasn’t settled here since the season ended,” said Doug Bowen who runs Alaska Boats and Permits in Homer.
In other news a report from the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources recommends an increase to West Greenland’s coldwater shrimp fishing quota for next year. This reverses years of declining coldwater stocks out of the fishery that has contributed to the overall decline in global pink shrimp supplies. "It seems that the last decade of negative developments in the shrimp stock in West Greenland may be reversed,” the Institute said. Greenland’s fishery officials will use this recommendation to set the inshore and offshore fishing allocations for next season.
Meanwhile, the ADF&G’s herring forecast for Togiak’s spring season has been announced at 32,449 tons, just slightly under last season’s total. Overall, the report found the fishery’s population to be in good shape.
Finally, US shrimp imports of all types were down over 10 percent in August. Shipments from all major suppliers outside of India were all lower compared to 2014 figures. Still, total US imports for the year are up over 3.5 percent, about 28 million pounds over last year at this time.
