Costco Says No to Genetically Modified Salmon

The FDA’s approval of genetically modified salmon last Thursday prompted a statement from Costco, the third largest retailer in the U.S., on Friday.
“Although the FDA has approved the sale of GM salmon, Costco has not sold and does not intend to sell GM salmon at this time,” the November 20 statement reads.
Other retailers have expressed similar reservations. Whole Foods and Trader Joes have pledged not to sell the salmon. Safeway and Kroger have issued less definitive statements indicating that they’re not planning to stock the fish. The 2014 Safeway statement says that, “we are not considering nor do we have any plans to carry GE salmon.
AquaBounty, producer of GM AquAdvantage salmon has said publicly they will not put a special label designating it as genetically engineered.
