Russia's Rosrybolovstvo to Prevent Participation of 'Crab Mafia' During Forthcoming Crab Auctions

Russia's Rosrybolovstvo (fisheries agency) has officially announced that it will organize auctions for the sale of crab quotas in the middle of January of 2016. This will be the first crab auction in Russia since 2012,when a similar auction resulted in the initiation of a criminal case against Alexander Ivankov, the former head of the Primorye territorial administration of Rosrybolovstvo, and the annulment of their results, amid the fears of the participation of crab mafia.
According to a recent decision of Rosrybolovstvo, auctions on the sale of quotas for the catch of Kamchatka, blue and hairy crabs in Primorye subarea and opilio snow crab on the Eastern Sakhalin will be resumed and are expected to be conducted no later than in January of next year.
