Cermaq Chile Cuts 1,000 Workers From Los Lagos Processing Plants

Chile's National Confederation of Salmon Workers (Conatrasal) confirmed that Cermaq Chile will layoff about 1,000 workers at its salmon processing plants in the Los Lagos Region.
The layoffs weren't a surprise to Conatrasal's Vice President Javier Ugarte who said salmon industry leaders planned to cut staff in the first quarter over high production costs.
However, there is worry that the region's entire salmon industry may slash more than the 2,000 total salmon jobs that was projected. Cermaq's 1,000 worker cut was more than originally anticipated.
The layoffs result in rampant unemployment for local economies that depended on the processing jobs.
"We are talking about rural communes where practically dismisses 98 percent of the workforce in the manufacturing industry in the district," said José Pacheco, president of worker union CUT Llanquihue...
