Some of China's Popular Seafood Gift Baskets Contain More Frozen Water Than Product

China's expanding seafood industry still resembles the wild west, where law and order are what you make it. In the run-up to Chinese new year, Seafood Gift baskets are very popular. Some contain fresh seafood, some frozen.
A reporter who visited some urban supermarkets found a wide variation in quality. On the noon of February 1, the reporter paid a visit to some urban store of seafood gift baskets and there were over ten packed gift baskets waiting to be delivered in front. According to the store owner, the gift baskets sold at about 400 yuan are most popular among consumers. And sometimes the price even reaches about 1000 to 2000 Yuan.
The seafood in the baskets were quite fresh and consumers need not worry about the freezing process or the package, added the owner.
In another wholesale market for aquatic products, the reporter has found two kinds of gift baskets. One is the simply packed gift baskets in refrigerators and they are filled with pomfrets, white Amur breams and abalones.
