Camanchaca Loses 1.5 Million Farmed Salmon to Algal Bloom in Los Lagos Pens SEAFOODNEWS.COM [Techno Press] February 26, 2016 An algal bloom has been blamed for killing about 1.5 million farmed salmon in pens owned by Chilean producer Camanchaca. The company reported the mortality losses at its production centers Puelche, Mañihueico and Contao, located in the Los Lagos region in the Caleta Puelche zone.  About 3 million fish were being raised at the centers with an average weight of the fish was about 2.3 kilos. Tonnage was estimated at 6750 metric tons, worth an estimated $22.2 million. Camanchaca general manager, Ricardo Garcia, said that they have "taken all contingency plans and planned mitigation for these situations, further contributing ships and high-tonnage fishing assets for removal and disposal of mortality."
