Update on EU Lobster Issue Shows No Countries Have Banned Live Lobster Shipments

Numerous sources have confirmed that at this time, no countries in Europe have a ban on live lobster shipments. In our story on March 8th, Europe Considers Ban on Shipping Live North American Lobster we reported that Sweden and Norway had already taken action, based on reports from Norway. This is not correct. Neither country has banned live lobster shipments.
Sweden has requested to the EU that the EU consider such a ban on environmental grounds, following the finding of North American lobsters alive in Swedish waters. However, the discussion on how best to address this problem has barely started, and it will likely be months before any further updates are forthcoming from the EU. Although some Northern European countries are supporting the Swedish request, it is highly likely that it will be opposed by many southern European countries who have been importing large volumes of North American lobster for many years with no environmental issues whatsoever...
